Archuleta Continues to Impress on ‘Idol’

As the competition tightens in this season of FOX’s “American Idol,” the show’s judges are running out of things to say about Murray teenager David Archuleta.

Having wowed the judges from the early going, Archuleta drew the standard chorus of “good performance,” “beautiful voice” and “smart choice of song” from judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell.

Donny Osmond urges David Archuleta to enjoy American Idol

One of Utah's most famous entertainers is giving a local "American Idol" contestant advice on enjoying the experience. Donny Osmond says he's spoken with 17-year-old David Archuleta of suburban Murray in the past week and told him he should just relax.

"Just enjoy the process because it is 15 minutes of fame, so enjoy every (one) of those 15 minutes," Osmond said.

Archuleta is one of nine remaining singer-contestants on Fox TV's popular show.

Osmond says Archuleta could have a long career in entertainment if he takes advantage of the "American Idol" appearance.

"But you've got to ride that wave as long as possible and then reinvent yourself -- continually reinventing yourself," he said.

Osmond, 50, has been in the entertainment industry since he was 6, beginning with appearances on "The Andy Williams Show." Since then, he's had chart-topping hits, acted, hosted variety, talk and game shows and starred on Broadway.

‘Think of Me’ Draws Cheers from Randy and Paula, Jeers from Simon

This week on “American Idol,” David Archuleta and his fellow top 6 contestants performed songs by world-renowned musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Archuleta sang “Think of Me” from Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera.”

“It was the bomb,” Randy Jackson exclaimed. “This boy’s the one to beat.”

“You took a risk on a known theatrical song and were quite able to turn it into a pop ballad,” said Paula, who also called the performance “perfect.”

But “Think of Me” was “one of [David's] weakest performances,” according to Simon Cowell. “It was all a bit forgettable for me,” he said, breaking his habit of treating David nicer than most “Idol” contestants.

But even Simon thought the performance was enough to carry David Archuleta into the next round.

Archuleta’s Father Denies ‘Stage Dad’ Rumors

Not only does David Archuleta’s dad claim he’s not the backstage terror that people have painted him to be, he says he wasn’t even familiar with the phrase “stage dad” until someone explained it to him recently. The “American Idol” front-runner’s dad — who was dubbed the “worst stage dad” by singer Naomi Judd, a judge on “Star Search” when a 12-year-old David performed on the show — told Us Weekly that he’s more like his son’s “music consultant.”

Finale Could Come Down To Cook Vs. Archuleta

It wasn’t long after Hollywood Week that the fans, the media, and the Las Vegas bookmakers started calling it. Come May 21, when this current and seventh season of “American Idol” is scheduled to conclude, there would be two men (well, a man and a boy) standing … and they’d both be named David.

In one corner, sporting the comb-over and that sexy, trademark scruff, it’s David Cook, the 25-year-old Daughtry-esque rock dude from Blue Springs, Missouri. And in the other corner, it’s David Archuleta, the charming 17-year-old with the cherubic face who calls Murray, Utah home.
